Car
Books, Car Repair Books and Service
Manuals
The Service Industry and Collectors
need these books for data, repairs and
authentication

Car books and
service manuals started to appear on
the market as early as the beginning
of the last century. Ford Motors is
responsible for generating strong
public awareness for cars and led the
car industry for many years. A new
industry was also created
simultaneously for servicing these
cars.
Today, we have a
large group of automobile manufacturers from all parts of the world
to choose from. Support for product and servicing can be
difficult in some instances and sends
us scampering for the specific auto
book, repair or manual to service them
and find out about them. Try to find a Renault part and
then try to find a service man to install it.
Without a repair book it would be
impossible for anyone to either
service or repair such a vehicle.
But it is a good car. That is
why these books are so valuable.
Car
Repair Books are intended for trade
mechanics and, therefore, a high level
of mechanical knowledge is required.
These books are not intended for
do-it-yourselfers as they cover many
brands and models in one volume. It is
not uncommon for one book to exceed
1,000 pages. |
Service Manuals are generally under 50
pages and can range from an overview of history for the vehicle, or
focus on a specific area of the vehicle. They are generally
used for a general, quick reference.
History books usually cover
either a specific vehicle or the entire range of vehicles as they
appeared on the market. There
are as many book formats as cars.
They can be quite interesting and are great gifts.
Coffee Table editions are of
course the show case of cars which can range over the entire
transportation field or again, focus on a specific line of vehicle.
They usually have high grade paper, flashy, excellent pictures - and
great superb formatting.
The Blue Book first published
in 1926 by Les Kelley is a price digest which provides official
valuation for most makes of vehicles. It includes the factory
price, average retail cost, average finance value,
wholesale value, plus VIN codes in the value tables. There are
different blue books for different years and types of vehicles.
The Black Book. No kidding -
it is real. For over 40 years it has been used for evaluating used
cars for insurance purposes, determining trade-in values and auction
pricing. It is based on current trends of actual sales.
The Red Book is an essential
car pocket reference book for a specific line of vehicles which provides
all the vehicles data over a specific period of time. They are
extremely useful for collectors.
