The latest era of  solar lighting came into being in the middle 1950's with the development of a battery that converted the sunlight into electricity.  Due to the lowing of the cost it became popular as landscape lighting for the average home. This is different than the solar applications built into homes for heat etc.  The solar battery applications recharge themselves during the day directly from the sunlight.  No sun then no light in the evening.  The batteries for most application have a life of about 12 months then they must be replaced.
