A trip to the world's oldest original model village
It’s great having so many wonderful attractions so close to our care home here in Buckinghamshire – although being so spoilt for choice can make it difficult to decide where to go first – and Bekonscot Model Village & Railway is one of our favourites.
Open seven days a week from mid-February to early November, this historic Gauge 1 model railway is famous for being one of the first in the country and offers a fantastic day out for people of all ages. For the residents of Portobello Place, especially those who grew up locally, it offers a real trip down memory lane – just in miniature!
Opening for the first time in 1929, Bekonscot Model Village and Railway is stuck in a 1930s-time warp. But it’s not just a model village – there’s also 1.5 acres of wonderful gardens to wander around, with the railway weaving through the greenery. Interestingly enough, back in the ’80s, Bekonscot was regularly visited by Princess Diana with Princes William and Harry!
If you’ve never been before, it’s well worth a visit! And you’ll be joining the 15,000,000+ people who have visited since it opened its doors all those years ago. Better yet, as Bekenscot is operated by the Roland Callingham Foundation, their income is shared with charitable organisation and to date, they have donated over £5.5 million to various local charities, including health and educational endeavours, and church and community groups.
At Portobello Place, we’re pleased to be able to visit Bekonscot in the warmer seasons and we’re looking forward to going along soon. After all, it’s only 10 miles away so we should make the most of this miniature world away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
