Inspired and stimulating events at Portobello Place

Meet Sandra, our Events Manager here at Portobello Place care home in Chartridge. Sandra has extensive administration experience but fancied a change – that’s why last year, she decided to change her career and became an Activities Coordinator in a care home! We’re very glad she did as Sandra’s going to do a great job putting on all sorts of events and outings for our residents here in our luxury care home on the edge of Chesham.

Sandra’s passion is getting to know and work with residents, putting on events and outings that they enjoy and making the most of every single day. Here at Portobello Place, Sandra will be combining her love of events with her organisational experience, engaging with residents and helping them continue to live their lives to the full in our luxury care home in Chartridge.

Here’s what Sandra has to say about her new role at Portobello Place: “I seem to be saying how much I love my job these days! I am genuinely looking forward to welcoming everyone to Portobello Place and getting started with all the activities and events that we have been planning over the past few months, covering everything from fantastic singers here in our home to simple activities like ‘Postcards of Kindness’, a popular initiative that connects people in care homes both locally and across the world via written communication. I can’t wait to welcome you into our home.”

Here at Portobello Place in beautiful Buckinghamshire, Sandra will be organising extravagant weekly events complete with top notch entertainment in the bar bistro, and all our residents’ friends and family members are more than welcome to come and join in the fun – we’ll also be welcoming in members of the local community, so if you fancy coming along to see what all the fuss is about, please do pop in. If you’re considering care in Chartridge for yourself or a loved one, it’ll give you a taste of what life’s like here. All events are completely free of charge, including refreshments, and all we ask is for people to let us know they are coming.

We’ll be announcing our first few events very soon, so keep an eye out! Follow us on Facebook and join our mailing list (there’s a link at the bottom of the page) to stay in the loop and be the first to hear about our brilliant events here at Portobello Place in Chartridge. We hope to see you very soon.

Recipe of the Week - Portobello Mushrooms on Toast

One of our signature dishes which a rustic essence, can be served as a starter or main course with a salad. The sherry perfumes the dish wonderfully.

Ingredients for 6 people
- 6 thick slices of rustic bread of your liking toasted and buttered
- 1lb Portobello mushrooms sliced
- 8oz Chanterelle mushrooms sliced
- 8oz quartered button mushrooms
- 3 Banana Shallots roughly chopped or sliced
- 2 Crushed garlic cloves
- 3-4 tbsp Olive oil
- 2oz butter
- A good heavy splash of Tio pepe dry sherry
- ¼ pt. Double cream
- Salt & pepper to taste
- Coarsely chopped parsley

This operation is done very quickly and on high heat, just be careful of the hot oil doesn’t slash and when you flambé with the sherry.
1. Heat the olive oil and butter in a large frying pan.
2. Add the shallots and soften quickly.
3. Add the mushrooms and garlic and sauté quickly.
4. Splash with the sherry, careful it may catch alight because of the alcohol content.
5. Add your double cream and season to taste, reduce for 2-3 minutes.
6. Place the toasted bread on individual plates and divide the mushrooms over the top, sprinkle with the chopped parsley.

You can add some spinach leaves after you have added your mushrooms and use Brandy or Madeira instead of the sherry. This is like a mushroom stroganoff; you can add a tablespoon of paprika with the mushrooms and serve it with rice or mixed into some cooked pasta.

Some of the best Chilterns countryside near our home

Have you heard of Hughenden? If you haven’t then you’re about to see a whole new world as it’s one of our favourite National Trust properties – and it happens to be rather close to Portobello Place care home in Chartridge.

Hughenden is a Victorian Manor and was home to Benjamin Disraeli, who you may know as Queen Victoria’s favourite Prime Minister. As his home from 1848 to 1881, this spectacular building has seen political drama, royal visits and holds a variety of secrets too, with Disraeli known for his captivating personality and rather colourful private life.

In addition to the fantastic collection of personal memorabilia inside, there’s all sorts to explore outside, with over 680 acres to discover. With Italianate-style formal gardens, terraces, lawns, beech woodlands and landscape views in the parkland, the whole place is waiting to be explored.

At Portobello Place, we’re so pleased to be just 20 minutes away from Hughenden, and we can’t wait to take our residents and those here for respite care to this stunning estate soon.

A trip to the world's oldest original model village

It’s great having so many wonderful attractions so close to our care home here in Buckinghamshire – although being so spoilt for choice can make it difficult to decide where to go first – and Bekonscot Model Village & Railway is one of our favourites.

Open seven days a week from mid-February to early November, this historic Gauge 1 model railway is famous for being one of the first in the country and offers a fantastic day out for people of all ages. For the residents of Portobello Place, especially those who grew up locally, it offers a real trip down memory lane – just in miniature!

Opening for the first time in 1929, Bekonscot Model Village and Railway is stuck in a 1930s-time warp. But it’s not just a model village – there’s also 1.5 acres of wonderful gardens to wander around, with the railway weaving through the greenery. Interestingly enough, back in the ’80s, Bekonscot was regularly visited by Princess Diana with Princes William and Harry!

If you’ve never been before, it’s well worth a visit! And you’ll be joining the 15,000,000+ people who have visited since it opened its doors all those years ago. Better yet, as Bekenscot is operated by the Roland Callingham Foundation, their income is shared with charitable organisation and to date, they have donated over £5.5 million to various local charities, including health and educational endeavours, and church and community groups.

At Portobello Place, we’re pleased to be able to visit Bekonscot in the warmer seasons and we’re looking forward to going along soon. After all, it’s only 10 miles away so we should make the most of this miniature world away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

If you like the sound of our trips at Portobello Place, get in touch today and find out how we can help you lead a happy and fulfilling life in our home.

Practically perfect performances right on our doorstep

Just down the road from Portobello Place in Chesham is the Elgiva Theatre, which puts on theatre, film and music events. We’re lucky to have such a fantastic facility so close by, and we’re planning on taking residents to the theatre from time to time once we’re up and running.

The venue boasts a wide-ranging programme comprising all sorts of professional and amateur productions, along with top comedy, musicals, ballet and dance, one-night shows, an annual pantomime, an eclectic range of Hollywood blockbusters, exhibitions, and even weddings and other public and private events! There really is something for everyone, and we’re sure the people who call Portobello Place their home will love it.

You’ll find the Elgiva right in the heart of Chesham, and it really is a great theatre with a very personal feel. There’s a café too, serving up tasty treats all day, so be sure to pop in and have a look around – you might manage to see a show or a film while you’re there too!

Proud to sponsor Chess Vale Bowls Club in Chesham

Here at Portobello Place residential care home in Chartridge, we really want to integrate our home into the local community – one of the steps we’ve taken to make this happen is making the decision to sponsor Chess Vale Bowls Club. Based just down the road from our Buckinghamshire care home, the Bowls Club is a hive of activity and we can’t wait to build a great relationship with them going forward.

The club was founded in 1931 and used to sit adjacent to Chesham Station, closing in 2000. Thankfully, the club’s current green on Asheridge Road became their new home in 2005 – and here we are today. Taking part in several leagues, along with the Bucks Cup, the club holds regular fixtures both home and away, so there’s plenty to get involved with.

Hopefully in the future, we’ll see some members of the Bowls Club enjoying the entertainment evenings here at Portobello Place, and we’re sure we’ll be regular visitors to the green on Asheridge Road too.

A stunning National Trust park just a stone’s throw from Portobello Place

Just half an hour away from our home is the National Trust’s beautiful Ashridge Estate, a truly stunning 5,000-acre area of the Chiltern Hills with beech and oak woodlands, commons and chalk downlands – have you been before?

Here at Portobello Place care home, we love getting out and about, and we can't wait to start taking our residents to interesting places nearby – how lucky are we to have somewhere as stunning as the Ashridge Estate so close by?

We always enjoy seeing new places and doing new things, but there’s something special about the Ashridge Estate that keeps us going back time and time again – if you have never been, you must visit. And be sure to go back to see how it changes with the seasons, it really is beautiful whatever time of year you go.

We can’t wait to get out in our eye-catching Portobello Place minibus and start exploring the vast parkland. Give us a wave if you see us out and about!

We’re big fans of the Brownlow Café too, situated by the Bridgewater Monument – their scones are delicious. Hopefully we’ll be making another visit sometime soon.
